Elegant Amethyst and Pearl Brooch

A dramatic brooch set with a small dark amethyst and four pearls.  The gemstones are set along a geometric frame that is intertwined with stylized foliage.  Crafted in 14kt gold circa 1910.

This brooch is one of those delightful jewels that falls between the predominate design styles of the early 20th century - Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Edwardian and Arts & Crafts.  It relies more on the jeweler's unique imagination than any one school of design for inspiration.  It is a lovely example of the jeweler's art.

The back of the brooch is nearly as intriguing as the front.  Note the sturdy frame that protects the gemstones and anchors the design.  To this were added the central motif and intertwining foliage when the jewel was hand assembled.

When worn the brooch is secured with a sturdy pin stem and early safety clasp.  The top of the clasp is stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold.
