Art Nouveau Onyx and Gold CufflinksAmerican Art Nouveau |
Beautiful Art Nouveau cufflinks with black Onyx centers surrounded by dramatic gold borders. A dramatic example of the swirling curves and organic shapes favored by American Art Nouveau artists. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
Art Nouveau jewelers often drew inspiration from nature and exotic flora and fauna. The gold borders are slightly textured to create a vine-like, or possibly reptilian, appearance. The rich details of the borders are highlighted by the depth of the design and natural patination of the gold.
Cufflinks, like all fine jewels, should be closely inspected from every angle. The backs of these cufflinks are beautifully constructed with sturdy bezels and cross members to secure and protect the Onyx centers. Also note the maker's attention to small details in the sturdy brackets and cross bars.
These elegant cufflinks were created by the jewelry maker George O. Street & Sons. Based in New York City, the firm specialized in fine gentlemen's jewelry, including cufflinks, watch fobs and signet rings. The maker's mark for George Street (an "S" in an oval) and "14" for the purity of the gold are visible on the reverse of the cufflinks. Name: American Art Nouveau |
