Elegant Gold Art Deco CufflinksBlackinton Ovals! |
Art Deco design was influenced by sources as diverse as the modern passion for speed and the tribal arts of sub-Saharan Africa and Oceana. This pair of gold Blackinton cufflinks is a nice example of the latter influence. Perhaps the linear centers and repeated dot-and-dash borders were inspired by the ceremonial shields of West Africa. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1930.
The backs of the cufflinks are well crafted. Note the sturdy cross bars and ribbed brackets that secure the links. The gold surfaces are polished to a mirror-like finish (please excuse the dark reflections from our camera).
The cross bars are stamped with the maker's mark for Blackinton & Company (a sword impaling a capital letter "B"). To the left of the maker's mark is the 14kt gold stamp ("14K"). Blackinton & Co. was a maker of fine jewelry and accessories during the early decades of the last century and often took inspiration from distant and ancient cultures.
