Sapphire and Diamond CufflinksCarrington Sapphires and Diamonds! |
Sapphires and diamonds sparkle in these lively Edwardian cufflinks from the early 1900s. The gemstones are set in platinum and surrounded by classic twist borders with millegrain edges. A wonderful example of the elegant cufflinks created by Carrington & Company. Crafted in platinum and 14kt gold, circa 1920.
Also known as "Night and Day" cufflinks, sapphire and diamond cufflinks were a reflection of the Victorian belief that diamonds should only be worn after dark. A gentleman would wear these cufflinks during the day with the sapphires facing out. In the evening the cufflinks would be reversed to display the diamonds.
The cufflinks are beautifully crafted with solid cross bars and sturdy brackets anchoring the links on the cuff. The backs are crafted in 14kt yellow gold polished to a bright finish (please excuse the reflections from the camera).
The maker's mark of Carrington & Company (a "C" surrounding "14" for the purity of the gold) is found stamped on the cross bars. The reverse of the cufflinks are also marked "GOLD & PLAT" for the precious metals.
Carrington & Co. was a renowned maker of fine cufflinks, elegant dress sets and other jewels during the first half of the 20th century. The firm's gold and platinum cufflinks were sold by many of the finest jewelers of the day, including Tiffany & Company. Name: Carrington Sapphires and Diamonds!
