Art Deco Moss Agate Cufflinks

Moss agate cufflinks. (J9416)

Abstract Expressionism

Striking moss agates with green "seaweed" and dramatic splotches of red against a mottled honey-brown background.  These elegant cufflinks are perfect for when you want to express your inner Jackson Pollock!  Created by Carter, Gough & Co. in 14kt gold,  circa 1925.

Moss agate is a fine grain variety of quartz usually shot through with green seaweed-like inclusions and sometimes secondary patches of red and muted brownish yellow.  The dramatic colors and spontaneous patterns of these agates seem to anticipate the Abstract Expressionist art movement of the late 1940s and 1950s.  Eat your heart out Jackson Pollock!

The backs of these cufflinks reveal the care and craftsmanship with which they were created.  Here you can see the maker's attention to detail in the sturdy brackets and the strong cross bars and rings that secure these links on the cuff.  The backs were polished to a bright, smooth finish and the rounded edges rendered crisp and clean.

Carter, Gough & Co. was a maker of fine gold cufflinks, stickpins and other jewels during the early decades of the last century.  The firm was known for the quality of its craftsmanship and elegance of its designs.  The Carter, Gough maker's mark  (an arrowhead enclosing a small "C")  and the gold purity mark  ("14K")  are stamped on the reverse of the cufflinks.
