As with all fine jewels,  you should closely examine cufflinks from the back.  Here you can see the maker's attention to detail and the ornate scrolls that decorate the cross bars.  Also note the high polish and care with which the backs of the cufflinks are finished.

One side of the cross bars are marked with the purity of the gold and the maker's hallmark.  The maker's mark for Larter & Sons is visible just to the right of the "14K" gold mark.  Larter & Sons' hallmark is a spring-back shirt stud.

During the early decades of the last century some of the most elegant pairs of cufflinks were made by the firm Larter & Sons.  The firm was founded in 1865 and made distinctive cufflinks, dress sets and gentlemen's jewelry during the late Victorian era and first few decades of the last century.  The firm had offices in New York City and manufactured its jewelry across the Hudson in Newark, New Jersey.  It was known for elegant design,  innovation and craftsmanship.
