Classical Cameo Brooch of Athena
|
|
Athena exudes resolute calm as she vigilantly watches to her left. This finely carved onyx cameo beautifully captures the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom and strength. The cameo is set in a finely crafted gold brooch accented with dramatic Vitruvian scrolls and a twisted-rope border. This late-Victorian jewel was created in 14kt gold circa 1900. ![]() The detail of the goldwork and
the depth of the carving of the cameo is seen in his side view
of the brooch. Cameo jewels were often created as an
anonymous collaboration between a gifted goldsmith and an
inspired cameo carver. In this beautiful brooch the
mastery of both artists is readily apparent.
![]() On the back of the brooch you can see the care and attention with which the goldsmith worked. Note the sturdy gold frame that supports the open back of the onyx cameo and the surrounding twisted wire border. Further care is evident in the crispness of the edges and the smooth evenness of the gold surfaces. Finally, a sturdy clasp and pin stem secure the jewel when worn. ![]() The top of the clasp is stamped "14K" for the purity of the
gold. The design of Name: Athena, Goddess of Wisdom |
