Art Nouveau Amethyst BroochArt Nouveau Amethyst |
A lovely pale amethyst rests between the wings of a fantastic night creature, perhaps a bat or exotic moth. Beneath the amethyst a small pearl glows like a distant moon. A wonderful expression of the Art Nouveau taste for beauty and fantasy. Created in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
The reverse of the brooch is solidly crafted in 14kt gold with a sturdy frame to support the flowing design. Note the sturdy pin stem and early safety clasp that secure the brooch on a blouse or jacket lapel. The care taken in crafting this jewel is equally evident on the front and the back of the piece.
On the reverse of the brooch just beneath the amethyst a
small plaque is stamped with the maker's mark of Hayden W.
Wheeler & Company. The maker's mark (a large "W"
enclosing a smaller "H" and "W") is surrounded by "14" and "K"
for the purity of the gold. Hayden W. Wheeler was a
maker of fine jewelry and watch cases from the 1850s to the
early 1930s. Name: Art Nouveau Amethyst |
