Fierce Chimera StickpinWinged Lion |
A lion-headed creature with the wings of an eagle and sinuous, twisting body of a serpent protectively curls around a small luminous pearl. This chimera stickpin was created by Alling & Co. in 14kt gold circa 1890. Alling & Company was a maker of fine stickpins, cufflinks and other jewels during the Victorian era and early years of the 20th century. The firm's jewels were sold by the carriage-trade jewelers of the day - Tiffany & Co., Starr & Marcus and other luxury retailers. The Alling & Company maker's mark, a three-leaf clover with "14" and "A" in the leaves is stamped on the upper right reverse of the lion-serpent. The stickpin is beautifully crafted with a sturdy gold pin stem and solid gold back (see photo below). Cost: $385 |
