Regal Winged Lion CufflinksWinged Lions and Sapphires! |
Victorian gentlemen delighted in jewels inhabited by exotic and fantastic creatures. Here a winged lion-serpent fiercely guards a bright blue sapphire. The head and wings of the lion are beautifully sculpted and richly detailed. The chimera's tail curves beneath the sapphire and ends in a flourish of elegant scrolls and acanthus leaves. Created by Alling & Co. in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
These cufflinks are well constructed with solid gold tops attached to bean-shape backs by sturdy "Y" bridges. A small gold ball is set at the cleft of the "Y" to stabilize and strengthen the bridge. Victorian jewelers took special care with small, hidden details that are often overlooked today.
Alling & Co. was a maker of fine cufflinks and stickpins during the Victorian period and early 20th century. The maker's mark of Alling & Co. (a three-leaf clover encircling "14" and "A") is stamped on the bridges of the cufflinks.
