British Engraved CufflinksEnglish Roses! |
In the late Victorian and early 20th centuries British jewelers excelled at creating elegant cufflinks with wonderfully engraved floral and scroll designs. This pair with stylized roses blooming among sinuous, twining vines is a beautiful example. The blush of the antique yellow gold adds to the depth and beauty of the design. Crafted in 9kt gold, circa 1920.
British goldsmiths took great care and pride in crafting the cufflinks they created. This pair is secured on the cuff with sturdy loop brackets and three extended oval links. The gold backs are polished to a mirror-like finish. Please excuse the shadowy reflections from the camera. The cufflinks are signed with the maker's mark ("R.C.") of an as yet unidentified goldsmith. The hallmark for the London Assay Office (a leopard's head) and a date letter for 1921 (a Gothic small "f") are also found. Finally with British thoroughness each of the backs, as well as the oval links, is stamped "9" and "375" for the purity of the gold.
