Elegant Art Deco Cufflinks

William Huger Egyptian revival cufflinks. (J9280)

L' Egyptien

Finely detailed Egyptian Revival cufflinks from the Art Deco era.  On a small scale these cufflinks echo the ornate movie palaces of the 1920s exemplified by Grauman's Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Louxor Palais in Paris.  A diamond set on one side even sparkles like a searchlight crossing the night sky at a cinematic premiere.  Created by William Huger & Co. in 14kt gold, circa 1925.

In 1917 Theda Bara, starring in the film Cleopatra, sparked a passion for the architecture and artifacts of ancient Egypt.  The mania for all things Egyptian was furthered by the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922 and found expression in objects of all sizes.  Everything from palatial movie houses to intimate, small jewels reflected the interest in all things Pharaonic.  The above close-up illustrates the fine details of the stylized lotus blossoms, papyrus reeds and geometric motifs that decorate the borders of these cufflinks.

The backs of the cufflinks are beautifully crafted in 14kt yellow gold.  Sturdy brackets and cross bars secure the links on the cuff while protecting the reverse of the diamonds.  The yellow gold surfaces are polished to a bright, mirror-like finish - please excuse the shadowy reflections from the camera.

These elegant cufflinks were created by William Huger & Company, a maker of fine cufflinks and other jewels during the early decades of the last century.  The firm is especially known for its striking, richly detailed designs during the Art Deco period.  The maker's mark of William Huger & Co. (an "H" squeezed in the middle) is visible on the reverse of the cufflinks just to the right of the precious metal mark ("14").
