Elegant Antique Platinum CufflinksPlatinum Radiance! |
Beautifully crafted platinum cufflinks that epitomize the cool elegance of the 1920s. Featuring intricately engraved radiant centers surrounded by wave-like borders. These elegant cufflinks will inspire you to start singing "Putting on the Ritz". Crafted in platinum, circa 1920.
The engraved centers create an illusion of undulating ridges rising above the surface of the cufflinks. The intricate design is a beautiful example of engine turning, a technique invented in the 16th century for etching intricate patterns onto gold and other precious metals. Engine turning is sort of like Spirograph for fine jewelers.
The backs of the cufflinks are as well crafted as the fronts. The links are connected with sturdy cross bars and brackets. The backs are polished to a mirror-like finish - please excuse the reflections from the camera. Although there is no maker's mark on the reverse of the cufflinks, the intricate engraved design and the construction of the cross bars and brackets indicate that these cufflinks were crafted by Carrington & Company. Carrington was a maker of fine cufflinks and dress sets during the first half of the last century. They supplied beautiful gold and platinum cufflinks to many fine retailers of the day, including Tiffany & Company.
The reverse of the cufflinks are marked "PLATINUM". Platinum cufflinks from the first half of the last century are relatively rare. Because of the scarcity and costliness of platinum, few platinum pairs were created. During the 1920s platinum was eight to ten times costlier than gold. Then, during World War II platinum jewels were often sacrificed to support the war effort. Recent record prices for platinum and gold have also undoubtedly resulted in a further loss of fine antique jewels. The survival of an exceptional pair of platinum cufflinks is a rare event.
