Carrington Night and Day CufflinksCarrington Sapphires and Diamonds |
Elegant sapphire and diamond cufflinks in the
classic "night and day" style of the late 19th century.
One side is set with a rich blue sapphire and the other with a
sparkling diamond. The platinum tops are engraved with
fine pinstripes surrounded by classic Art Deco borders.
Created by Carrington & Company in 14kt gold and platinum,
circa 1925.
The backs of the cufflinks are finely crafted in 14kt gold. Carrington & Company's attention to small details can be seen in the strong cross bars and study raised brackets that secure the cufflinks on the cuff as well as protect the gemstones. Beneath the brackets the backs are stamped "GOLD & PLAT" for the precious metals.
The tops of the cross bars are stamped with the maker's mark of Carrington & Company, a "C" surrounding "14". Carrington was a maker of fine cufflinks and dress sets from 1900 to about 1950. Based in New Jersey, the firm created elegant platinum and gold cufflinks for many of the finest jewelers of the day. Name: Carrington Sapphires and Diamonds Night and Day Cufflinks
Sapphire and diamond cufflinks, sometimes known
as "night and day" cufflinks, were a reflection of
the late Victorian belief that diamonds should only be worn
after dark. In theory, a gentleman would wear these
cufflinks with the sapphires facing outward during the day and
in the evening reverse the cufflinks to display the
diamonds. In practice, personal taste and circumstance
most likely decided whether the diamonds or the sapphires were
displayed on the outer cuffs.
