Moss Agate and Gold CufflinksMoss Agates |
Elegant cufflinks with moss agates set in
bright yellow gold. The moss agates are beautiful examples
with the appearance of dark green seaweed floating in the
ocean. Created by Carter, Howe & Company in 14t gold,
circa 1910.
Moss agate is an alluring fine-grained variety of quartz with
striking green inclusions. The gem was a favorite among
jewelry makers and wearers in the early 1900s. The care the maker took in crafting these cufflinks can be seen on the backs. Note the smooth finish, the crisp edges, and the sturdy brackets and cross bars that secure the cufflinks on the cuff. The backs are crafted in 14kt yellow gold and polished to a bright finish. The cross bars are stamped with the maker's mark of Carter, Howe & Company (later Carter, Gough). The firm created fine gold and platinum cufflinks and other jewels during the early decades of the 20th century. The maker's mark (a small arrowhead surrounding the letter "C") is stamped to the right of the "14K" gold purity mark.
