Elegant Amethyst StickpinLeaping Alien |
A rich amethyst set in an imaginative,
fantasy-inspired setting with hints of Art Nouveau and Classical
design. This wonderful stickpin was created by Day, Clark
& Co. in 14kt gold circa 1900. The Art Nouveau era was a period of enthusiastic creativity. Jewels were often simultaneously wonderfully evocative and intriguingly enigmatic. The top of this stickpin could be seen as a big-headed, one-eyed alien leaping upward. Or, perhaps, it is a sculptural fantasy with hints of past civilizations like the fin de siècle furniture of Carlo Bugatti. The interpretation is in the eye to the beholder. Day, Clark & Co. was a maker of fine stickpins and other jewels from the 1870s to about 1930. The maker's mark of Day, Clark (a small barbell-style cufflink) is stamped on the upper right side of the pin stem along with "14" for the purity of the gold. The solid gold back of the top helps protect the amethyst and anchors the pin stem (photo below). Cost: $465 |
