Art Nouveau Chimera StickpinWiese Chimera

A French chimera stickpin with the head of a
woman, the wings and legs of an eagle and the body of a
serpent. Intertwining acanthus leaves and tendrils
surround the fantastic creature. Created by Louis Wiese in
18kt gold, circa 1900.
Jules Wiese and his son Louis were among the foremost jewelers of 19th century France. The father, Jules, created jewels in the neo Classical, Gothic and Renaissance tastes. Louis, while continuing to work with his father's historicist designs, also created jewels that anticipated and then flowed into the Art Nouveau fashion of the 1890s and early 20th century. This stickpin is a wonderful example of Louis Wiese's Art Nouveau work. The reverse of the stickpin (photo below) shows the care and craftsmanship with which this jewel was created. Louis Wiese's signature and maker's mark - "WIESE" with a star above and below in a horizontal lozenge - are visible beneath the pin stem. Cost: Although this elegant stickpin has sold, you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery. |
The reverse of this stickpin is stamped "WIESE" above Louis Wiese's maker's mark - "WIESE with a star above and below in a horizontal lozenge. The upper left of the pin stem is also stamped with the Wiese maker's mark, as well as the French assay mark for 18kt gold, an eagle's head in profile |
