Art Deco Carnelian BroochCornucopia |
An Art Deco carved carnelian brooch with two back-to-back cornucopia spilling apples, pears and cherries. The carnelian is surrounded by a gold frame accented with neoclassical motifs. An elegant brooch created by Taylor & Co. in 14kt gold, circa 1925. Carnelian is a translucent variety of quartz that glows with reddish orange color. The fine grain of the gem is ideally suited for crisp, richly detailed carvings.
The bezel setting is finely crafted with six tab prongs securely holding the carnelian. A sturdy pin stem and early safety clasp secure the brooch when worn. The gallery (side walls) of the setting is pierced with a decorative design complementing the neoclassical motifs of the bezel's face
This brooch was created by
Taylor & Co., a maker of fine jewelry established in the
late 1800s. The firm created beautifully designed jewels
into the 1930s and was especially known for the precision and
fine details of its craftsmanship. It is appropriate
that the Taylor maker's mark is a draftsman's T-square flanked
by "14" and "K" for the purity of the precious gold. The
maker's mark is stamped on the top of the clasp.
