Egyptian Revival StickpinVictorian Scarab |
A beautiful Victorian stickpin with a small
golden scarab set in a recessed shadow box. The finely
detailed scarab is surrounded by a frame embellished with
delicate wire scrolls and clusters of small golden orbs. A
tour de force of Victorian goldwork and design created in
14kt gold, circa 1875.
The opening of the Suez canal in 1869 sparked a renewed interest in the arts and artifacts of ancient Egypt. Victorian jewelers, always attuned to the popular passions of the day, incorporated Egyptian-inspired themes and motifs in their jewelry designs. The enigmatic scarab, a symbol of rebirth and eternity, was a favored element in Victorian Egyptian Revival jewels. The reverse of the stickpin is as beautifully crafted as the front (photo below). The closed back is crafted in 14kt gold polished to a mirror-like finish (please excuse the shadowy reflections from my camera). A sturdy pin stem secures the jewel when worn. Cost: Although this elegant stickpin has sold, you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery. |
