Elegant Sapphire and Scroll CufflinksVictorian Sapphires and Scrolls |
Rich blue sapphires set in gold framed by
exquisitely detailed, flowing scrolls. These elegant cufflinks
are a testament to the virtuosity and taste of the late
Victorian goldsmiths. Created in 14kt gold, circa 1890.
The backs of these cufflinks are as finely crafted as the fronts. Note that the backs are solid and polished smooth with crisply finished edges. Sturdy "lemniscate" (a jeweler's word for elongated figure eights) bridges and loop brackets secure the cufflinks on the cuff.
Jewelers in the late Victorian period had a way of working with gold to create elegant, finely detailed designs while maintaining a sense of the precious metal's solidity and heft. Cufflinks were often purchased with the intention that they would be worn and enjoyed in the present and then passed down as family heirlooms to future generations. This finely crafted pair is an elegant example.
