The Gold Bug

A beautifully rendered insect in the Art Nouveau idiom.  The creature's head is a small sparkling diamond set above an elongated shield-shape body.  The antennae, legs and wings radiate outward from the head and body in a series of concentric curves.  A wonderful example of the "insectomorphic" jewels favored in the early 1900s.  Created by Alling & Co. in 14kt gold.

Alling & Company was a maker of imaginative, finely crafted stickpins, cufflinks and other jewels from the mid 1800s to about 1915.  The firm's elegant, often whimsical creations were retailed by Tiffany & Co., Starr & Marcus and other carriage-trade jewelers of the day

The maker's mark for Alling & Company, a shamrock enclosing a "1", "4" and "A" in the petals, is stamped on the back of the bug to the lower left (see photograph below).

Cost:  $465

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is just over 2 1/2" long and weighs 2.3 grams.  The top is  5/8" tall and 9/16" wide.
