Platinum and Onyx Dress SetCarrington Onyx Dress Set |
During the first half of the last century
Carrington & Company was a renowned maker of elegant
cufflinks and dress sets. This wonderful dress set
features cufflinks, shirt studs and vest buttons with onyx and
pearl centers surrounded by ornate platinum borders.
Crafted in platinum and 14kt gold, circa 1920.
Complementing the cufflinks are three shirt studs. The onyx and pearl tops measure 5/16" in diameter and 1 1/8" in length. The studs have spring loaded backs - a design first patented by Halsey M. Larter in 1898. The studs are crafted in platinum and 14kt gold. The four vest buttons are the same size as the cufflinks, 9/16" in diameter. One of the nice small details of this dress set is that the center pearls are set in small platinum collets that protect the pearls and beautifully contrast with the black onyx. Carrington & Company created cufflinks for many of the finest jewelers of the day. This dress set was sold by Tiffany & Co. around 1920 in a fitted red leather box. The white satin lining of the box is marked "Tiffany & Co./New York/Paris - London". The base of the box is also blind stamped "Tiffany & Co". The backs of the cufflinks, studs and vest buttons are crafted in 14kt gold polished to a mirror-like finish (please excuse the reflections from our camera). The maker's mark for Carrington & Company, a "C" surrounding "14", is visible on the reverse of the cufflinks, as well as the precious metal marks for gold and platinum, "GOLD & PLAT".
