Art Nouveau StickpinLotus Rising |
A golden lotus blossom, finely sculpted in the
Art Nouveau style, reaches upwards as it opens towards the
sun. The dramatic design is accented with three small
pearls. Created by Carter, Howe & Co. in 14kt gold,
circa 1900.
Art Nouveau jewelers, always in search of "new and exotic" motifs, found inspiration in the beliefs and artifacts of distant and ancient cultures. A lotus blossom rising above the murky water and muck of its environs is viewed in some Eastern philosophies as a symbol of purity and transcendence. A sentiment beautifully captured in this finely crafted stickpin. The reverse of the stickpin is as well crafted as the
front. The polished gold back is attached to the pin
stem with a sturdy collet setting (photo below). The Carter,
Howe maker's mark is stamped on the upper left side of
the pin stem with "14" for the purity of the gold. Cost: Although this elegant stickpin has sold, you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery. |
