Edwardian Platinum and Pearl Cufflinks

Edwardian Opulence!

Jewelers of the Edwardian period (1900 to 1915) were masters of creating opulent, richly detailed jewels within a small space.  These cufflinks are a wonderful example.

Reeded platinum rims surround carved mother of pearl spirals.  At the center is a small pearl set in a milgrained platinum collet.  The perfect balance of elegance and opulence.

The backs of the cufflinks are well crafted in 18kt gold.  A sturdy five-link gold chain connects the tops.  Edwardian jewels often have platinum tops and gold undersides.  This practice is a holdover from the Georgian period (1714 to 1830) when diamonds were often set in silver and backed with gold.

Each of the backs is stamped with the purity of the gold and platinum ("18ct & Pt").  The cufflinks come with a bit of provenance.  They are accompanied by the original jeweler's box.  These cufflinks were originally sold around 1900 by F. Winterbottom, a watchmaker and jeweller, in Oldham, England.
