Victorian Bloodstone CufflinksVictorian Heliotrope! |
Heliotrope, or bloodstone, is a mesmerizing gemstone that glows like fiery embers amid smouldering, dark ashes. It was a favored gem for gentleman's jewelry during the Victorian era and early 20th century. These beautiful bloodstones are set in oval gold frames and secured by Fleur-de-lys prongs. Created by George Street in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
The backs of the cufflinks are open to show the beauty of the gemstones. Bloodstone features bright red iron oxide set in a matrix of dark green to black chalcedony. The links are connected with lemniscate (elongated figure eight) cross bars, a design popular in the years around 1900.
These striking cufflinks were created by George O. Street & Sons, one of the earliest manufacturing jewelers in the United States. Founded in 1837, the firm specialized in fine gentlemen's jewelry, including cufflinks, watch fobs and signet rings. The maker's mark for George O. Street (an "S" in an oval) is stamped at the base of the strap brackets. Name: Victorian Heliotrope! Cost: Although these elegant cufflinks have sold, you will find many more fine cufflinks in the Antique Cufflink Gallery. Measurements: These 14kt gold cufflinks weigh 11.5 grams and are 3/4" long by just over 1/2" wide. |
