Krementz Lion Cufflinks

These leonine cufflinks have several nice features.  The lions face each other,  so when worn on the cuff the lions both face in the same direction - not one forward and the other backward.  Some cufflink makers cut corners by using a single die to create both tops.  Krementz & Company did not.

Another nice feature of these cufflinks is that the backs are decorated with the same roaring lions that roam the grassy savanna on the fronts.

Often the backs of Victorian cufflinks were left unadorned or just engraved with the initials of the original giver or wearer.  As a result, the backs looked plain and unfinished.  To remedy this sartorial shortcoming,  Krementz & Company around 1900 created a collection of cufflinks with decorated backs.  The backs usually presented a scaled-down version of the fronts (like these roaring lions) or an image along a similar theme.

These cufflinks are well constructed.  The sturdy curved bridges are securely attached to the fronts with "double U" braces.  At the other end the curved bridges attach to the "bean backs" with a sturdy collet.  The elegance and simplicity of the design is a reflection the maker's attention to small, often unseen, details.

The bridges are stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold.  Just to the right of the gold mark is the maker's mark of Krementz & Company  -  a stylized rendering of a collar button.  Founded in 1866, Krementz created elegant, original cufflinks during the Victorian era and the first half of the 20th century.

Measurements:  These 14kt gold cufflinks measure 3/4" by just over 1/2" wide.  They weigh a total of  5.0 grams.
