Art Deco Red Coral and Pearl Brooch![]() Red Poppies and Pearls |
|
A striking brooch with red poppies carved in oxblood coral framed by an angular setting reminiscent of the fretwork in an elegant Chinese screen. The alternating white and yellow gold sections are accented with four small pearls. This Art Deco brooch weds Machine Age chic with traditional Eastern design. Created by Krementz & Co. in 14kt gold circa 1930. ![]() The intricate beauty of the brooch is balanced by the simple elegance with which it was created. On the reverse, a sturdy gold plate anchors the angular design elements while supporting the settings of the coral and the pearls. A strong pin stem and early safety clasp secure the brooch when worn.
The top of the clasp is stamped with the maker's mark of Krementz & Company (a stylized collar button) above "14K" for the purity of the gold. Although sometimes referred to as "the moustache," the Krementz maker's mark is in fact a stylized profile of a collar button introduced by the firm in the 1870s. Krementz & Co. was established in Newark, New Jersey shortly after the Civil War and created beautifully designed, finely crafted brooches well into the 20th century. Name: Red Poppies and Pearls |
