Krementz Lion CufflinksRegal Lions! |
A lion with a regal golden mane rises from the grass and roars fiercely. The lion is beautifully detailed with a full mane, whiskers and fierce eyes. A wonderful example of the richly sculpted cufflinks created in the years around 1900. Crafted by Krementz & Company in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
This pair of leonine cufflinks is particularly nice with the lions face each other. This assures that on the cuff both lions will face forward and be rightside up. Some cufflink makers used a single die to create both tops. This would result in one lion facing forward on the cuff, while the other would either be facing backwards or uspide down.
These cufflinks have another nice surprise. The backs, like the fronts, are decorated with roaring lions. The backs of Victorian cufflinks were often left unfinished or occassionally engraved with the owner's initials. As a result the backs often looked plain and uninspired. To remedy this, around 1900 Krementz & Company created a beautiful series of cufflinks with decorated backs. Like these regal lions, the cufflinks reflected the themes and designs favored during late Victorian and Art Nouveau periods.
The cufflinks are well constructed. The tops are attached to the decorated backs with sturdy curved bridges. The elegance and simplicity of the design is mirrored in the maker's attention to finish and small details.
The bridges are stamped with the maker's mark of Krementz & Company - a stylized collar button somewhat resembling a nose and moustache. The maker's mark is seen just to the right of the "14K" gold purity mark. Founded in 1866, Krementz created elegant cufflinks and dress sets during the Victorian era through the first half of the 20th century.
