Krementz Lion CufflinksRoaring Lions! |
A roaring lion proclaims his sovereignty over
the windblown grasses of the savanna. The lion is finely
sculpted with a richly detailed golden mane, sharp fangs and
fierce, piercing eyes. A wonderful example of the elegant
figural cufflinks created in the late Victorian period.
Crafted by Krementz & Company in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
These leonine cufflinks have several nice features. The lions face each other, so when worn on the cuff the lions both face in the same direction - not one forward and the other backward. Some cufflink makers cut corners by using a single die to create both tops. Krementz & Company did not.
These cufflinks have another nice surprise. The backs are also decorated with roaring lions. Often the backs of Victorian cufflinks were left unadorned or just engraved with the initials of the giver or wearer. As a result, the backs looked plain and unfinished. To remedy this sartorial deficiency, around 1900 Krementz & Company created an inspired series of cufflinks with decorated backs. The backs usually presented a scaled-down version of the fronts or an image in a similar theme.
These cufflinks are well constructed. The decorated tops are sturdily secured to curved bridges with Krementz' signature "crow foot" braces. The bridges are then solidly attached to the decorated bean backs. The maker's attention to finish and small details is mirrored in the elegance and simplicity of the design.
The bridges are stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold. Just to the right of gold mark is the partially obscured maker's mark of Krementz & Company. Founded in 1866, Krementz created elegant cufflinks and dress sets during the Victorian era and the first half of the 20th century.
