Sapphires and Diamonds!

Bright blue sapphires and sparkling diamonds set amid finely engraved, intertwining foliage.  Elegant scroll-and-volute borders in the early Art Deco taste decorate the edges.  The twining vines around the gemstones appear to be ivy - a symbol of eternal fidelity and affection.  Created by Krementz & Co. in 14kt gold,  circa 1925.

The reverses of the cufflinks evidence the the clean geometric lines of Art Deco design.  The solid gold backs and sturdy octagonal borders support the elegant fronts while helping to protect the gemstones.  Also note the thick cross bars and sturdy trifid (three-toed) brackets that secure these cufflinks on the cuff.  The Krementz firm took equal time to assure that its cufflinks were as well crafted as they were elegantly designed.

The cross bars of the cufflinks are stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold.  To the right of the gold stamp is the maker's mark of Krementz & Company - a stylized collar button (also known as the "Krementz moustache" or "two-handle umbrella").  Founded in 1866, Krementz and created elegant cufflinks and other jewels during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Sapphire and Diamond Cufflinks

Sometimes known as "Night and Day" cufflinks,  sapphire and diamond cufflinks were a reflection of a Victorian belief that diamonds were only to be worn after dark.  A gentleman could wear these versatile cufflinks during the day with the sapphires facing outward.  In the evening the cufflinks would be reversed to display the diamonds.

By the Jazz Age of the 1920s,  it is doubtful that the fashion strictures of the Victorian era still held much sway.  Instead it was the elegant interplay of the diamonds, sapphires and beautifully worked gold that gave these cufflinks there jazzy appeal.  The same appeal holds today.
