Engraved Onyx and Pearl Dress SetBlack Tie Elegance |
Evening dress in the early 20th century set a
high standard for sophistication and elegance.
This full dress set is a striking example. Onyx centers
are set with luminous pearls and framed by sculpted borders with
milgrained edges. The onyx centers are finely engraved
with radiating designs and flowing Edwardian
scrolls. Created by Larter & Sons in 14kt yellow
and white gold, circa 1925. Complementing the cufflinks are three shirt studs and four vest buttons that repeat the engraved onyx and pearl design of the cufflinks. The vest buttons (one shown above) are the same size as the cufflinks with just over 1/2" by 1/2" tops. The shirt studs (pictured below) are 5/16" by 5/16" and 7/8" long. This elegant dress set was created by Larter & Sons. The venerable firm of jewelry makers was founded in 1865 and created fine dress sets and cufflinks during the late Victorian era and first half of the 20th century. The firm's distinctive cuff jewels and accessories were offered by many of the finest retail jewelers of the day. As with all important jewels, one should examine the backs of cufflinks as closely as the fronts. The 14kt yellow gold backs of these cufflinks, shirt studs and vest buttons are finely crafted. Note the maker's attention to detail in the soft rounded edges of the backs and the sturdy cross bars and strap brackets that hold the cufflinks on the cuff. The maker's mark of Larter & Sons (the profile of a shirt stud invented by the firm in 1898) is stamped on the cross bars. Surrounding the maker's mark is "14K" for the purity of the gold.
