Art Nouveau Garden CufflinksJapanese Garden |
An exuberant tangle of wild chrysanthemums,
foliage and sinuous vines fill these wonderfully graphic
cufflinks. The dramatic design is inspired by earlier Art
Nouveau and Japanese works. Elegantly crafted in 14kt
gold, circa 1920. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, western artists and jewelers were deeply influenced by the arts and artifacts of Japan. These cufflinks are a striking example of this influence on early 20th century design. The maker's passion for fine craftsmanship can be seen on the backs of the cufflinks. Note the sturdy curved cross bars and strong brackets which secure the cufflinks on the cuff, as well as the crisp, gently rounded edges and the mirror-like finish of the gold. The maker's passion for quality is evident even in the smallest of details.
One side of the cross bars is stamped "HALLMARK", the maker's mark of United Jewelers, Inc. United Jewelers was an association of retail jewelers founded in New York City in the early 20th century that created fine cufflinks and other jewels during the 1910s and 1920s. The opposite side of the cross bar is stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold.
